Anadromous native populations exist in all Pacific coast states, including Alaska. Now widely found in most states, including eastern drainages of the Rockies, Appalachian drainages, and the Great Lake states.Originally thought to be found west of the Appalachians and east of the Mississippi River valley with some possible habitations slightly east and west of those lines, it is now found in most states with the exception of some of the north-central Rocky Mountains states.
